The Countrymen’s Club

What a fantastic initiative for getting older men out and about and keeping them active. Could you benefit in your care home?

The Countrymen’s Club – organised by Future Roots, a charity which uses farming and the countryside to address social and health problems in the community – is based on a farm in Dorset, and runs programmes for those aged 50 and above. Born out of a need to reach isolated men from rural communities, the project’s activities include working with animals and spending time touring the farm and discussing changes, through to picking fruit or vegetables and then cooking a meal to be shared. Other activities include art therapy, traditional songs and poems, general woodwork or small building projects.

It is a varied programme but it always involves time outside in the fresh air come rain or shine. The project is open to all, but is designed to address rural isolation and meet the needs of those with lifelong conditions who find it difficult to socialise and access the countryside or work activity.
